Bleyer and Lane Accepted into Heart of America Fellows Institute of ACTEC

Andrew Bleyer and Lana Lane, associates in the Private Client Group, St. Louis, Missouri, have been accepted into the inaugural class of the Heart of America Fellows Institute of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC).  The Heart of America Fellows Institute was created by ACTEC Fellows to develop the profession’s future leaders in trust and estate law through a series of in-depth educational presentations led by outstanding subject matter experts in each filed from across the U.S.  The institute includes six sessions for lawyers who were nominated by an ACTEC Fellow and selected through a competitive application process.  The program begins in November 2018 and concludes in May 2019.

Thomson Reuters Checkpoint Calculates Projected Inflation-Adjusted Figures for Estate and Gift Taxes for 2016

ThinkstockPhotos-482577350Thomson Reuters Checkpoint has calculated the projected inflation-adjusted amounts for several transfer tax figures for 2016. These calculations are based on the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 12-month period ending on August 31, 2015. Please note that these are the projected inflation-adjustments and not the official figures from the IRS which will be released later in the year.

The following relevant items are included within this report:

• The “unified credit” or lifetime gift tax and estate tax exemptions are projected to increase from $5,430,000 in 2015 to $5,450,000 in 2016.

• The generation-skipping transfer tax exemption is also projected to increase from $5,430,000 in 2015 to $5,450,000 in 2016.

• The gift tax annual exclusion is not projected to increase; it is projected to remain $14,000 in 2016.

The IRS has released inflation-adjusted numbers for several estate and gift transfer tax items for 2015. The following items are included within this release:

• The “unified credit” or lifetime gift tax and estate tax exclusion will increase from $5,340,000 to $5,430,000 in 2015.

• The generation-skipping transfer tax exemption will also increase from $5,340,000 to $5,430,000 in 2015.

• The gift tax annual exclusion will not increase for 2015 and remains at $14,000.

• The gift tax annual exclusion for gifts to non-citizens spouses will increase from $145,000 to $147,000 for 2015.
